Short Story The Jewelry By Guy De Maupassant: Summary And Analysis

M. Lantin, the main character in the story, is what makes readers feel different emotions. M. Lantin, having lived through the entire story of his life, is now miserable. There are many lessons to be learned from this story. One of these is gratitude for all that we have. M. Lantin got married to a beautiful but poor woman, who was a dream for many young men. She seems “to be an ideal example of a pure and good woman to which every young man wants to entrust their future.” M. Lantin is in love with her, and they get married. She is very proud to be M. Lantin’s wife. She can manage finances well enough to allow her family to live in luxury, even with a very low income. Her husband is her only income earner.

M. Lantin presents her with her wife at the start of the story. M. Lantin is so in love with his wife that six years after he got her married, he loves her more than he ever loved her the first time. He does not always appreciate the woman he loves. She is in love with him, but he also found fault with his love for her. He is tired and refuses go to the theatre with her. It’s understandable because men must work and need energy to spare. He tries to persuade her to leave him and go with another person. Although she initially doesn’t like the idea, she eventually agrees. He is not supportive of her jewelry obsession, even though she loves it. Instead of encouraging her choice, he says “My dear. If one doesn’t have the means or desire to own real jewelry, one should be adorned with one’s natural beauty and grace.” He does not like the idea of his wife wearing fake jewelry. He continues to think his wife is a Gypsy, despite all the excuses he makes. The wife succumbs to pneumonia after a night out at the theater. M. Lantin is saddened and almost follows her to the tomb. His hair became white in one month. This story can make readers think about what it would have been like if he was there at the theater with his wife. His wife could have been saved by him protecting her from the terrible winter night. He may regret it for the rest in his life.

The story does not make this point clear. The author describes M. Lantin’s personal life, which readers can recognize. He loses his focus and begins to sob. He no longer resembles a chief clerk. He seems all hopeless and depressing. M. Lantin became a bit more indebted after a break from his career. All the while, he is thinking about his wife’s jewelry. He has always believed that all the jewelry was fake. Now, he feels forced to buy the jewelry and takes them to the shop to get their estimates. He couldn’t imagine the jewelry being so expensive. This is not only a reveal. It’s also the beginning of a story.

Different people may have different assumptions. He believed it might be a gift from his wife. According to my opinon, his wife saves money by wearing these jewelry. Her description of her is that she “rules his home with an economical so adroit they seem to live comfortably” at the beginning. It is clear that she has the financial ability to purchase fine jewelries. M. Lantin does not feel content knowing that the jewelry could save his lives. His mind is so unsure at that point. People try hard to make money. In this case, he is not able to decide what to do with his wealth. He cannot buy happiness with money. Six months later, the unhappy husband marries again. He probably would spend every moment regretting his first marriage. This is a great lesson for us all. Money cannot buy happiness. We should always be grateful for what we have.

Guy de Maupassant’s story “The Jewelry” was my choice. This story is full of hidden meanings and symbolism. The text uses deception, perfidy and deceit throughout. Lantin and his spouse are the story’s main characters.

Lantin is a young man who marries his wife in the middle of the 19th century. Although his wife was born into a poor family and had recently moved to France, Lantin quickly gets married. Lantin and the wife of his life are middle-class, with a salary around 3,500 Francs per annum. The wife loves theatres and fake jewelry. Lantin is not fond of her fake jewelry. Lantin believes one should only appear beautiful and graceful–and these gifts can be the most expensive of jewels. Lantin’s wife died eight days later from pneumonia. Lantin suffers from depression and ends up looking whiter than his wife. In an effort to make more money, Lantin considers selling the jewelry of his wife. He doesn’t like it anyway. But he discovers the fake jewelry is genuine and it is worth more than 200 000 francs. His new inheritance makes him lustful, and he is overjoyed to have a better life. He is now married to a very irritable woman, half a years later.

From the text, it is clear that the theme is conveyed with deceitfulness and perfidy in order reveal the compelling truth of life’s irony. Ironically, he was content with his wife, despite being poor. However, he became wealthy and married again. He was unhappy. It is difficult to interpret literature because of the fluid interpretation required and the use of the text. This is a challenge in a world where everyone follows the steps and examples. I’m more mathematically inclined so I prefer to keep my thoughts inside my bubble. I’ve had a lot of experience learning to see the bigger picture and not just the words. The most fascinating thing about “The Jewelry”, is the mystery that leaves the reader wondering where and how the wife got the money to buy all of the jewelry. One of the jewelers who purchased the jewelry back said, “The woman who owned these must’ve put all her savings into jewelry.” This makes it more interesting for readers to keep reading. Lantin failed to notice that his wife enjoyed her jewelry. He was blinded in bliss and oblivious of the truth. Lantin discovered what he was missing until he lost it.

Guy de Maupassant’s deceit and question of infidelity keep the reader guessing. The plot twists and turns along the way keep the reader interested.
